Commonly found throughout most of the United States the Nuthatch
frequently visits backyard bird feeders. They love seeds
especially sunflower seeds. Whenever possible plant some
sunflower
seeds in the same area as you put your Nuthatch bird
feeders. You will be amazed at how many extra birds visit your
yard for the fresh sunflower seeds.
The two most common Nuthatches found are the White Breasted
Nuthatch and the Red Breasted Nuthatch. The Red Breasted
Nuthatches migrate south in early July and reach their
destination by
October. The White Breasted Nuthatch is
normally territorial throughout the year, with pairs
staying together.
The Nuthatch gets it name from the way they gather nuts and
seeds, jam them into tree bark and then hammer or “hatch” the
food open with their bills.
The Nuthatch
will creep headfirst down tree trunks making for quite
the circus act to watch.
Nuthatches eat insects, spiders and seeds. Nuthatches
love to visit bird feeders and will stay around if you
keep your bird feeders full.
