Hummingbird feeders make an excellent backup when your flowers are not in bloom. They are also great to have if you don't have a place to plant flowers. Even if you do have flowers they will feed from feeders. And you can draw them right in close so you can get a real good look at 'em. Hummingbird Feeder Facts 1) You can make your own nectar from a sugar and water mixture of 4
parts water to 1 part sugar. Simply bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Turn heat off and add
1 cup of sugar. Stir until no sugar granules can be seen. Don't make the mix any stronger.
Too much sugar is bad for the hummingbirds.
3) Clean your hummingbird feeders every 3 days when temperature reaches 85°. It is best to figure out about how much the hummingbirds consume every 3 days. Then add about that much nectar. The reason for cleaning the feeder is the nectar will get moldy. This can be seen on the feeder as black building up. 4) Never use honey or any food coloring to feed hummingbirds. It can kill them. 5) Hummingbirds are very territorial and will chase each other away from "their" feeder. They can injure each other with their sharp pointed beaks. Sometimes it is better to hang up more than 1 or 2 feeders, especially when you start getting lots of visitors.
