  Duck Houses

Duck houses are needed now more than ever. Natural nesting areas are becoming scarce as more wetlands are being destroyed. Ducks houses work great in improving the duck population because ducks  will occupy duck houses naturally.

The best time to put up duck houses is December through February. Duck houses should be placed by or directly over water. Duck houses placed beside wood rivers and over ponds get filled easily.

When putting duck houses up be sure to space them far enough apart so that it is hard to see one duck house from another.

Do not put 2 or more duck houses very close to each other as this will encourage a competition for the duck houses and will lead to dump nesting.

Dump nesting is when more than one hen uses a single duck house. There can be more than 70 eggs in one dump nest. This can drastically lower the ducks population.

Ducks do not carry nesting material into the nest. You will need to keep 3” of wood chips in the bottom of the duck houses to insulate them.

Without the help of human intervention ducks would be struggling to find adequate nesting spots.
